A Little Bit of Alien Abduction: StarTropics

HOW MANY BITS, MERCER?: 6/8 Bits

This is probably one of the most random games I have ever played. In fact, looking back on all of the games that I used to play as a child, it is no wonder that we all turned out as bizarrely as we did. I mean, come on, look at the rest of the games that I've talked about on here so far, and tell me that they are not INFINITELY stranger than any games that are circulating now-a-days.

Anyway, StarTropicsStarTropics was designed for NES, and was never released anywhere except for North-America and Europe. This games centers around the main character, Mike, who is a star baseball played from Seattle. He heads out to go and visit his uncle "Dr J." on C-Island (a play on early programming?) but upon arrival discovers that he is missing! So, Mike is given a yo-yo as a weapon, and sent down a long tunnel to where his Uncle's Lab was; defeating monsters in the process.

Mike joins up with his Uncle's helper Baboo, and the robot NAV-COM, and sets of to leave C-Island on his Uncle's Submarine, the Sub-C. As they are traveling away, Mike meets a mother dolphin who requests his assistance in helping her retrieve her dolphin-son. Mike, being a sterling hero, decides that he WILL help the mother-dolphin, and thus heads off on an expedition to a coral-reef island. It is here that he discovers a message in a bottle from his dear uncle claiming to have been abducted by Aliens. Then Mike meets up with a huge Octopus, and defeats him.

Are you excited yet? I know I am; it only gets better from here. So, Mike gets ship-wrecked after defeating the Monster-Pus, and discovers the chief of the island's daughter is in a coma. This is when it gets strange, out of nowhere Mike is fighting fire-monsters, ogres, pirates, parrots, zombies, etc. All of the stuff that dreams are made of.

They (Babboo, NAV-COM, and Mike) discover a way to decipher the message being sent out by a transceiver that Dr. J. planted on himself. Soon, the find him, laying down next to a large hunk of metal which apparently is an alien space pod. Dr. J. encourages the group to go and steal the cubes from the aliens around him (this doesn't make much sense to me, and never has). Mike ends up destructing the space-ship after killing the head alien.

The space-ship explodes, and they almost drown. Mike, Babboo, Dr. J, and NAV-COM end up back on C-Island, where the put the cubes together, and 7 children with their princess appear.

That's the end of the game. Gotta love Old school.
